Wind energy in Brazil ranks sixth in the world rankings for installed capacity, with 80% of Brazilian wind farms located in the northeast, a region with one of the best winds in the world for wind energy production. Wind power plants currently represent 11.46% of the Brazilian energy matrix, with 298 wind power plants installed. In this scenario, the country is the sector leader in the South American market with a generation capacity of 22 GW, equivalent to about 9.5% of the national electricity matrix. According to the Infovento Report 2023, issued by the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEólica), Rio Grande do Norte is the largest producer of wind energy in Brazil. Second and third places go to Bahia and Piauí.
According to Elbia Ghannoum, President of the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEólica), Brazil’s potential is enormous and plays an essential role in ensuring a clean and sustainable energy matrix, in line with the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “In addition to its environmental value, wind energy has proven to be a very profitable investment. Every real investment in this sector generates a three-fold return, which directly affects economic growth. Data from 2022 indicate a record number of new wind energy installations in Brazil, Which strengthens the sector as one of the engines of job creation and development.
