“Unconventional” batteries
There is a global race underway for energy storage. It arose mainly due to the growth of “non-firm” energy sources such as solar and wind. In California (USA), new residential solar projects are only approved if they incorporate batteries.
Technically, the justifications are widely known! In Brazil, there is a much simpler, more practical and proven efficient alternative.
Replacing instantaneous showers by storage water heaters, programmed to heat water during off-peak hours.
In my house, we have had these heaters for decades, and they are excellent.
Everyone wins. The production chain of the electricity sector from generation, transmission, distribution to the end customer.
Technically, it is due to the “increase in the load factor”. In other words, more energy is delivered with the same infrastructure. There are 60 million homes in Brazil. The vast majority are equipped with instantaneous showers. This is certainly one of the largest aggregate loads in the country.
