The approval of the Future Fuels Law, last Tuesday, October 8, by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, represents a new milestone for the Brazilian bioenergy sector, with the creation of innovative mechanisms to encourage bioenergy in Brazil. Public policies to be implemented through the new legislation will support the production of biofuels in the country, including ethanol, biomethane and SAF, a sustainable aviation fuel.
βBrazil is a model for the world. You have no idea how I feel today when I look at the world and say: Brazil is the country that will achieve the largest energy revolution on the planet,β Lula said. He added: βThe imposition of this law is proof that there is no right to “For any of us to continue not to believe that this country can become a great economy.”
During the Fuel of the Future approval ceremony, at the Brasilia Air Base, UNICA President Evandro Gossi highlighted the importance of the new law for the country. βI would like to salute President Lula and congratulate him on this historic moment we are living in. We can say that the future of sustainable mobility has arrived today, and Brazil is leading this process. But the future never comes alone, it does not come by inertia or randomly. The future comes through Building human hands and the future fuel bill will transform this sector.
The Minister of Mines and Energy (MME), Alexandre Silveira, spoke about the importance of this moment for Brazil and for economic development. “With a lot of sweat and work, we are planting a new seed, the seed of the fuel of the future. It will generate more than R$ 260 billion in agriculture and the biofuel chain. The fuel of the future puts Brazil at the forefront of the new economy, the green economy,” he noted.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Arthur Lira, stressed that βwe still have a lot of work to do during the remaining three months until the end of this year and together, the House of Representatives, the Senate and the Executive Branch, we will be committed to voting on the bill.β The best projects that are still in the field of energy transition, clean and renewable energy, so that our country becomes what it is: the great engine of clean energy in the world.
Federal Representative Arnaldo Jardim, rapporteur of the Fuels of the Future bill, stressed that Brazil has one of the most renewable energy arrays in the world. βWe have biofuels and we will be at the forefront of the world. Brazil is not an environmental tormentor. Brazil is at the forefront of the new economy, the low-carbon economy, the green economy. Today we reaffirm this commitment.β
Fuel of the future
The Future Fuels Act creates a new legal framework for the biofuels sector and recognizes its important role in the energy transition. It is expected to expand the ethanol mixture in gasoline, an important measure for sustainable mobility while reducing CO2 emissions. Furthermore, one of the most innovative aspects of the new law is the life cycle assessment to measure the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle kilometre.
It also provides for the establishment of the National Program for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (ProBioQAV), the National Program for the Decarbonization of Natural Gas Producers and Importers, and biomethane incentives. In addition to establishing the regulatory framework for carbon capture and storage, Brazil is expected to avoid emitting 705 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2037. (unique)
