Inside Climate News: “Popemobile—and the U.S. Postal Service—are going Electric.” These vehicles are 2 high-profile examples of the accelerating adoption of EVs globally. The bespoke Mercedes-Benz for the pope ‘will eventually be joined by many other EVs, as the Vatican plans to make all its vehicles emission-free by 2030.’ This is of course a logical next step ‘after Pope Francis’ climate change encyclical Laudato Si’, published in 2015, and his follow up, Laudate Deum, both of which have made a theological case for climate action.’ Closer to home, the U.S. Postal Service started down the road of its rollout of new mail delivery vehicles earlier this yr, the majority of which are electric. And yes, they look ridiculously like a duck from the side, with a tall head + low beak, but the drivers really like them. The explanation is that the hood had to be low enough for the shortest drivers, + the storage area behind the driver’s seat high enough for the tallest drivers. [And remember the pope will be standing in his vehicle as well]. Ask a postal delivery person, + they will tell you they love especially the quiet, + the air conditioning is places like Georgia. And EVs are in the air in Europe, because essentially all of these countries will be banning fossil fuel cars by 2035, the U.K. by 2030. “There are parts of the world where not having an EV is novel, and one of them is Norway, where 95% of new car sales are EVs. Iceland is another country that’s nearing 90% EV adoption.” Even the U.S. now is around 10%. There are ‘pockets of acceptance, some of them not in states you might expect. “Florida’s very high in EV adoption, Texas is, and the coasts.” Understand how important it is that red states are installing wind + solar plus buying electric vehicles. The momentum is such that even a new, atavistic presidential administration is not going to be able to halt this progress.
