With the coldest weather since 2015 moving into the PJM Interconnection footprint of 13 states and the District of Columbia, America’s largest grid operator has issued a cold weather alert warning that a new all-time winter peak electricity demand is possible over the next few days. Electricity demand on Tuesday (January 21) and Wednesday is expected to approach PJM’s all-time winter peak of 143,295 megawatts (MW), set on February 20, 2015. Additionally, as of Friday (January 17) the New York ISO (NYISO) was forecasting peak demand to reach 24,400 MW this coming Tuesday – the all-time NYISO record for winter peak demand is 25,738 MW set on January 7, 2014 – during the infamous 2014 Polar Vortex. On that day, the temperature in Central Park in New York City was 4 °F (−16 °C). The previous record low for the day was set in 1896. Stay warm out there.
