Launch of a publication on biofuels at the G20 meeting in Foz do Iguaçu (PR)
Given the urgency of climate change, low-cost and quickly implemented decarbonization alternatives, such as ethanol, cannot be ignored, and biofuels are a quick and cheap alternative to reduce global transportation emissions. This is the main message of the executive summary of the book “Bioethanol: a fast path to decarbonisation of mobility”, produced with the support of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Center for Administrative and Strategic Studies (CGEE), with coordination between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MRE), Mines and Energy (MME), and Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
The preview of the publication, of which Professor Luiz Horta Nogueira is the coordinator, and which will be launched at the beginning of 2025, was released on Tuesday, the first day of the G20 meetings, in Foz do Iguaçu.
According to José Luis Jordon, Director of Productive Development, Innovation and Foreign Trade at BNDES, Brazil has an advantageous strategic position with regard to biofuels and decarbonization of the economy. “The energy transition is a priority of President Lula’s government and the New Industrial Policy and this book reinforces the relevant contribution that Brazil is making to the global effort to reduce emissions,” he said.
The Director of the Development Bank pointed to the case of India, which, in less than five years since the introduction of ethanol blends, has already come close to replacing 20% of its gasoline consumption. He said: “It is Brazil’s duty to remind the world that there are affordable options to replace oil, with lower costs and the need for investment.”
The launch of the publication with the G20 is part of the Brazilian diplomacy strategy to search for cases similar to the Indian one, and contribute to the creation of a global market for ethanol.
According to Itamarati Ambassador and Minister of Renewable Energy, Andre Correa do Lago, “The Brazilian experience with ethanol is one of the most successful in the world and worth sharing. We hope that this book will be useful to public policy makers who want to explore the potential that ethanol offers to promote sustainable development and reduce Emissions (Pendis News Agency)
Efforts to increase the global introduction of ethanol are in addition to initiatives at the domestic level, a prime example of which is next week’s sanctions on the Future Fuels Bill that, among other measures, increases the ethanol blend cap from 27% to 27%. 35%.
“Brazil, in addition to its ethanol production experience, has a series of successful public policies that we can share with other countries, as was the case with Proalcool in the past, RenovaBio and now PL Combustível do Futuro, which will be sanctioned in 2018.” Next week,” announced Alexandre Silveira, Minister of Mines and Energy.BNDES News Agency)
