Every week there is a story about the impact that artificial intelligence will have on electricity demand. Some forecasts have AI-related data centers consuming as much as 9% of total electricity generation. The environmental community is concerned that this will force utilities to continue to provide power generated from fossil fuels.
The big tech companies are concerned as well. Microsoft recently entered into an agreement to reopen one of the nuclear reactors at Three Mile Island to provide power exclusively for its data centers. Others are also exploring nuclear, along with alternative clean sources like geothermal.
Most of the focus has been on the possible negative impacts of AI. I’m guilty of that bias as well, having published a number of posts related to the potential disruptions that AI could cause. It’s time to balance the scales and say so what? Check out today’s post to understand some of the many environmental benefits AI can offer.
